The Paradox Of Being Awake

There is something comforting and safe about sleeping. We think it meets our basic needs. When tired, sleep. When unwell, sleep. When lonely, sleep. When sad, sleep. It is simple.

At the same time, sleeping encourages a kind of dangerous ignorance. Close our eyes and we don’t have to explore causes, impact, or how things relate. Complexity.

When we wake up, we know more. Not only that, but we question those very things that we think we know. We even question the way we know.

We understand more. And because we understand more, we want to sleep less. Life may seem more complicated. Yet, we are safer, more aware and rested.
